I’d always thought about skiing but never got around to it; a tropical beach or an exciting city always ended up tempting me more. That is, until I met my partner and finally got the chance to experience what is now my favourite kind of holiday.
Snow-covered peaks. Crisp mountain air. The sound of laughter echoing across wide, open slopes. If you’ve ever wondered why everyone needs to take a skiing holiday at least once in their life, you’re about to discover exactly why this experience stays with people forever.
Life can feel busy—full of screens, schedules, and constant noise. A skiing holiday changes that the moment you arrive. You wake up to mountain views, step into clean, cold air, and spend the majority of your day outdoors. It’s a physical and mental reset that’s hard to find anywhere else.
If you’re travelling as a family, this is where a ski trip really shines. Children don’t just enjoy it. They thrive.
Ski schools are welcoming, structured, and fun. Instructors know how to build confidence quickly. Even complete beginners often find themselves skiing gentle slopes within a few days.
And the sense of achievement? It’s huge. Kids love learning something new. They love being active. They love the snow.
Plus, it’s one of the few holidays where everyone disconnects from devices without being asked. Short days on the slopes mean cosy evenings together. Board games. Hot chocolate. Stories from the day. These are the moments that stick.
Here’s something many people don't realize: skiing is entirely optional. While it might be the headline act, the mountains offer so much more than just downhill runs. From relaxing in steaming thermal spas to exploring the landscape in a totally different way, the "non-skier" experience is just as rich.
You could spend your days:
Racing down the mountainside on a sledge.
Dog sledding through ancient pine forests.
Finding stillness while snowshoeing across quiet trails.
Ice skating under the lights of a mountain village.
Taking a cable car to the peak just for the world-class views.
Challenging yourself on indoor climbing walls found in many resort sports centers.
Even sitting on a sun-drenched terrace with a thick hot chocolate or a steaming vin chaud, watching the world glide by on the slopes, can make you feel completely content. It’s one of those rare moments where you feel exactly where you’re meant to be, wishing time would just stand still.
This is why you don't need to worry if someone in your group isn't keen on skiing; they won’t just "manage"—they’ll likely end up loving the mountain lifestyle just as much as everyone else.
Mountain dining is a highlight in its own right. Think hearty meals and cozy settings, whether you're stopping for a sunny lunch halfway up the mountain or enjoying a relaxed village dinner.
My personal favourite is Tartiflette, a speciality of the Savoie region in France. The combination of creamy potatoes, smoky bacon, and melted Reblochon cheese is my dream meal. If you find yourself in Austria, the Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes) is a must, and you can’t leave Italy without trying a Bombardino.
The Après-Ski Atmosphere
The fun doesn't end when the sun dips behind the peaks. Après-ski is the heartbeat of the mountain—the legendary social hour where the boots stay on and the music goes up. Whether you prefer a lively slope-side bar with a DJ or a fire-lit lounge with a local craft beer, it's the perfect time to swap stories of your "wins and wipeouts" before dinner.
Beyond the scenery, a ski trip brings people together. Unlike holidays where everyone drifts off in different directions, here, the experiences are shared.
Whether your group is a mix of complete beginners taking their first steps or seasoned experts tackling the high peaks, you’re learning together, laughing through the tumbles, and celebrating small wins. For children, the mountains are a playground where they thrive. Ski schools are structured and fun, building their confidence so quickly they’re often skiing gentle slopes within days.
It’s also one of the few holidays where everyone disconnects from devices without being asked—replaced by board games, hot chocolate, and stories by the fire.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it. One of the best things about the mountains is the sheer variety on offer; from complete beginners taking their very first turns on gentle nursery slopes to seasoned experts hunting for steep black runs and off-piste powder, there truly is a world for everyone.
Whether you're looking for a quiet village, a luxury spa stay, or a lively resort, there is a mountain experience to suit your budget and style. Most people who try it once find themselves returning year after year, finding something new to love every time.
